Why Use Caffeine in Your Hair?

There are many health benefits to using caffeine for your body and skin, but what are the benefits of a coffee based shampoo, and why should you use it?

The main thing to try and decipher is if caffeine can really help hair loss. The key is to try and confirm:

  • Does Caffeine (or Coffee!) improve hair thickness?
  • Can Caffeines slow down or stop the loss of hair?

The scientific thinking is that a chemical called dihydrotestosterone which is a type of a testosterone component, (short form referred to as DHT)  tends to dry up your hairs follicles which is why your scalp hair thins and drops, leading to hair loss and baldness.

Caffeine Shampoo Fact: According to research carried out at the University Clinic Jena, Germany, suggested that caffeine can penetrate hair follicles which helps in the protection of hair roots from premature hair loss.

The study suggested that caffeine blocks the effects of DHT, which is one of the chemicals that can be harmful to your hair follicles. The caffeine in shampoos is supposed to block or reduce the effect of DHT, which would enable them to regenerate follicles naturally.

The Research Around Coffee and Hair Loss

Caffeine Helps Regrow Hair

The International Journal of Dermatology published a study within which it suggested that caffeine can help re-stimulate hair in humans, and could be a component of hair growth serums and products.

The 2007 research article found that coffee lowered the effect of testosterone induced hair loss, while at the same time it did have an effect of stimulating hair growth.

Unfortunately this research wasn’t based on the use of a coffee shampoo, instead the study dosed the hair follicles of their subjects with testosterone, then applied caffeine to the same follicles. The study indicated that the effects of the testosterone were suppressed while at the same time it was observed that the follicles indicated some growth. However this study wasn’t carried out on the head, but in laboratory conditions.

The same year, another study DID find that a coffee based shampoo can definitely be absorbed by the hair follicles, and as such stimulate growth and reduce effects of DHT, however the study left the caffeine shampoo on for at least 2 minutes.

Last year, (2014) a study called “Differential effects of caffeine on hair shaft elongation, matrix and outer root sheath keratinocyte proliferation, and transforming growth factor-β2/insulin-like growth factor-1-mediated regulation of the hair cycle in male and female human hair follicles in vitro.” by the British Association of Dermatologists concluded that caffeine:

  • Helps in Shaft elongment
  • Increased the growthphase
  • stimulated natural proteins in the hair

This study reveals new growth-promoting effects of caffeine on human hair follicles in subjects of both sexes at different levels (molecular, cellular and organ).

What does that mean for Caffeine and Hair Growth?

That doesn’t mean that you should start swilling cups of joe, in order to get to the right dosage you would need over 50 mug of coffee, and that isn’t healthy, you are more likely to stop your heart before it helps your hair follicles regrow.

This is why many shampoo companies have started using caffeine in hair products, as in their concentrated form, they can be applied direct to the root.

Caffeine and your  Hair

Your hair needs a lot of vitamins, nutrients and key minerals to stay healthy. At the same time your hair needs protection from chemicals that can stop healthy hair growth. Over and above, there are many health and medical related issues that can negatively affect your hairs health and growth. Underlying conditions such as stress also play a key role in disgruntling your follicles.

Although not all products work for everyone for all conditions, some products work for some people to help treat some conditions, as such caffeine, a product naturally rich in antioxidants has been proven to have some positive effect in battling DHT as we have mentioned earlier.

So how does caffeine in general, affect your hair?

Your hair length and health is determined by the health of the follicles and their stage in the cycle of growth. Disturbances in the hair growth cycle can cause issues in the growth of a healthy hair follicle.

Caffeine protects your hair against negative chemicals during all stages of the hair growth cycle, and helps pave the way to stimulate static hair follicles.
